Bibliotherapy. It sounds like a long word that tells you talk to a shrink. But, the truth is… it’s a word you should add into your vocabulary more often than what you think. Children and adolescents are known to struggle with depression. It has been proven that bibliotherapy has been a useful coping mechanism to combat depressive episodes in children which means that books really do have a way of being able to create a safe space to help one to heal from trauma. Bibliotherapy helps with mental health issues through the usage of stories to create real world meaning in a child’s life.
Not only is bibliotherapy used in children, but it’s also used to help with adults who are struggling with a series of mental health issues from anxiety and depression, to eating disorders, substance abuse, relationship issues, and even existentialism. These different emotional issues are helped with stories by creating an atmosphere where adults feel comfortable with identifying a variety of social situations and behavioral patterns. In identification of different social situations, adults are able to help themselves with creating new and creative coping strategies to help with the onset of their symptoms.
